Debra Winger to Make Broadway Debut Opposite Patti LuPone in David Mamet’s The Anarchist

Film favorite Debra Winger will make her Broadway debut this November in David Mamet’s previously announced new play The Anarchist alongside two-time Tony winner Patti LuPone. LuPone was originally reported to star alongside Laure Metcalf, who withdrew from the production due to scheduling conflicts. Directed by Mamet, The Anarchist begins performances November 13 and will open December 2 at a Shubert Theatre to be announced. 

Set in a women’s prison, The Anarchist is a two-character play about an inmate with a radical past (LuPone) who asks the prison’s female warden (Winger) for parole. While Mamet is famous for keeping mum about his projects, a prior press announcement for the play described The Anarchist as a “new play about politics, money, religion and sex.”

Winger’s stage credits include How I learned to Drive and Ivanov at the American Repertory Theater in Massachusetts. Her film and TV credits include Urban Cowboy, The Sheltering Sky, Rachel Getting Married, In Treatment and Law & Order. Winger earned Academy Award nominations for Terms of Endearment, An Officer and a Gentleman and Shadowlands.
